Finally! For the first time ever, I attend the biggest metal festival in South East Asia, Magnitude Hammersonic 2016. The 2-days festival (April 16th – 17th 2016) didn’t only provide you 2 usual stages, but 4! However, being 2-days doesn’t mean it’s gonna be expensive because guess what, it’s totally free on the first day!
Moving to Ecopark, Ancol won’t stop local and internasional metalheads’ steel soul to thrash this annual festival. As a matter of fact, there are more metalheads hailing from West and Center of Java instead of local resident (Jakarta) when the festival was opened by Meet & Greet session with Suffocation. One thing I never expected of this band, they were extremely nice! Their attitude is simply rad and can inspires local metalheads that being on the higher ground doesn’t always mean that you’re “superior”.
From a total of 4 stages (Soul of Steel, Extreme Moshpit, Hammer, and Sonic), only Soul of Steel and Extreme Moshpit stage were activated on the first day. You’re given the free will to watch Noxa, Koil, Dead Vertical, Edane, Divine, Jasad, and Revenge The Fate at Soul of Steel stage or watch Power Punk, Petaka, Blind To See, Savor of Filth, and Turtles Jr. at Extreme Moshpit stage. Worry nothing, as you wouldn’t be bothered by the thought of who to watch ‘cause these two stages applied back-to-back performances. FYI, these two stages are considered new stages in Magnitude Hammersonic, Soul of Steel presented by the sponsor and Extreme Moshpit presented by the famous radio / youtube metal show.
Metal Convention was one of the main reasons why Magnitude Hammersonic 2016 was held for two days. Through Metal Convention, you would be given insight about music industry in general which is divided into three sessions, Meet The Agency, Meet The Label, and Magnitude Hammersonic 2016 Metal Awards. Stephen Mellul from Continental Concert was appointed as Meet The Agency guest speaker while Roman Alexander Hodl from District 19 for Meet The Label. The two sessions were hosted by the Extreme Moshpit TV duo, Gebeg and Eben. All Metal Convention sessions took place at Soul of Steel stage, which means the band and the convention would need to take turn.
Though the content was mainly metal, funny as it is, Magnitude Hammersonic 2016 Metal Awards was hosted and entertained by two “The most-not-metal-at-all persons at Hammersonic 2016 Awards”, Morfem/The Upstairs lead singer Jimi Multhazam and stand-up comedian Soleh Solihun. This Award categorized various nominations which are: Dangerous New Band, Breakthrough, Best Live Band, Soul of Steel Awards, Album of The Year, Inspirational, Most Dedicated Person, Metal Icon Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, dan The Hammersonic Award. From which categories, Burgerkill won the most prestigious one, The Hammersonic Award. Well I hope by educating the audiences regarding how metal industry works and showing their favorite musicians got appreciated in the most decent way would inspire them to keep support, or even be directly involved in building local metal scene.
Following the awards, Deathcore unit from Bandung, Revenge The Fate, closed Magnitude Hammersonic 2016 day one. However, I think it’s safe to say that Koil was another highlight for Magnitude Hammersonic Day 1 beside Metal Convention. Otong (vocalist) wasn’t only committing the goes-without-saying gimmick of smashing guitar, he also gave an Epiphone Flying V to a lucky metalhead. Beyond rad!
Day 2 was overwhelmingly full of metal units from local to international. The Hammer and Sonic doublestage were also activated on the second day. Only this time, you need a bit of extra effort to move here and there ‘cause Soul of Steel and Extreme Moshpit stage were separated pretty far from the main stage, Hammer and Sonic stage. So it’d best to make a who-to-watch list, ‘cause I did (I still missed some performances though, ugh).
Under the big bright yellow sun (not-so-metal pun intended), Magnitude Hammersonic 2016 metalheads were thrashed out by Engorging, Bandoso, Fronxside, Onslaught, and Darkest Hour performances at Hammer stage and Descane, Umbramortis, Social Black Yelling, Internal Bleeding, Obscura, and Rise of The Northstar at Sonic stage. While not minding their skin got burned, the audiences had shown their steel soul strength even though it’s still daylight. Endless crowd surf and intense circle pit while the Germans death metal unit, Obscura performing their notable songs such as Ode To The Sun and The Monist was the prove of the metalheads madness.
For those who chose to avoid the sun were also thrashed by Soulsick, Soulare, Serigala Malam, Extreme Decay, and many other performances at Soul of Steel stage and Dissectomy, Black Teet, Inwise, Error Brain, and etc at Extreme Moshpit stage. If you notice, these two stages were dominated by local bands and they were meant to be. Revision Live and Extreme Moshpit TV presented these two stages for the “Local Heroes” (title embedded for local metal bands by Magnitude Hammersonic 2016) who have built the scene from zero. Just imagine how the scene is gonna be without these steel-souled local heroes who tirelessly give life to the scene? An well-placed appreciation I’d say!
Unfortunately heavy rain came rushing to Jakarta and forced the organizer to stop all outdoor stages performances, including Hammer and Sonic stage. Luckily enough, bands at the Soul of Steel stage “steal the crowds” without even trying ‘cause all audiences took shelter in the convention, where the stage located. These lucky bands are Rezume, Taring Hellcrust, and Burgerkill. But I’m pretty sure that without this lucky coincidence, the metalheads would still look out for these bands because they were simply rad! Not to mention the always powerful and magnificent Burgerkill who performed songs such as Atur Aku, Shadow of Sorrow, and Under The Scars that afternoon.
Burgerkill performance also signified the end (for the day) of Soul of Steel stage and all metalheads begun to move to the main stage, Hammer and Sonic stage. Delayed for about 2 hours due to the heavy rain, this double stage were activated once again at 7 PM and Walls of Jericho were appointed as the first band post-rain to thrash the stage. Following WOJ, Leave Eyes, Gorgoroth, and Drowning Pool turned the audiences head upside down. Asking Alexandria and Angra were held responsible for the younger and older audience satisfaction too.
Funny thing happened just before the Magnitude Hammersonic final performance of the legendary death metal unit from New York, Suffocation. Bill Robinson, Frank Mullen substitute, was made grumpy and anxious due to Angra endless set. Almost literally endless, if it not because Suffocation started their set on a short notice, Angra wouldn’t finish their endless set. Nevertheless, Suffocation closed the Hammer stage and Magnitude Hammersonic 2016 as well with tight set by performing songs such as Breeding The Spawn and Pierced From Within.
Spending 2 days at Magnitude Hammersonic 2016 was worth the excitement and the weary feet. Not only just for the audience, Magnitude Hammersonic 2016 was also great for the bands. Eben (Burgerkill) even said that this year festival was more like a local bands reunion. Props to Revision Live for the great and inspiring Magnitude Hammersonic 2016, can’t wait for next year’s hammersonic with even extreme line-up!
